One of the things I love to do are these thumbnail sketches. It´s my favorite part of each illustration process even if I end up not using most of what I do, it creates a nice archive of stuff to reference later.
So here´s a couple of simple examples of how I can start an illustration. In this stage this is where you can define not only the essential shapes of your pic but also very important the dark/light values you might want to establish from the start. After this is just a question of how much details you want to paint later.
