“EDEN WORLD/TREE WORLD” – Work in progress/Work on halt. :)

This is from a personal project that I have in my imagination for years but I don´t have time to work on it and so it´s still kept in the drawer. This is so old that it´s even from when I was still doing illustration in traditional ways; real watercolor, inks, pencils, ballpen, etc.

Treeworld

Nevertheless this is a story I have in my mind which was actually inspired by some books of one of my favorite sci-fi classic authors; Clifford D.Simak and until I figure out a way of not making it too similar this project is on hold as I was doing it just for fun anyway. In the meantime I took some images out of it and I even created a Poster for a print company some years ago which made my “Eden World” become “TreeWorld” for a while.

“RUSTING WORLD” : Early concept sketches for an old Video Game project.

About 25 years ago, when computers had 256 color screens and were just leaving the age of the old green screen MS-DOS style monitors; I worked for a company that developed not only the first Portuguese PC Video Game wich was produced professionally in Portugal but also one of the first video games to use more than 65.000 colors; which at the time even got us the attention of Virgin Games and Psygnosis. There is a long story to tell about this so I will do it in another post as there is a lot to show about the old PT video game “GAMBYS“.
This post now concerns one of the video games that we were planning to do next and so these are some of the first illustrations I did to conceptualize the world. “Tomb Raider” was just coming out and suddenly there was a 3D way to create video game worlds which we were planning to maybe explore. So what you see next are some of my early ballpen sketches I just doodle loosely for about a month or so trying to come out with some Rusting World concept that we could transform into scenery later.

Unfortunely at the time with no Internet to speak of and no way of marketing a product like this properly, the game company I worked for decided to abandon game production and go into hospitality software which was cheaper and faster to create and commercially was a lot more profitable locally at the time. (Windows 95 hadn´t even come out when we completed “GAMBYS” the video game which was still in MS-DOS); so what remains of the Rusting World concept I did for when we were thinking of continue to develop games are these sketches you see above.

OLD CONCEPT ART : BALLPEN & PAPER ROUGH DETAILED DOODLES (1996/97)

Back in 1996 after we completed the work on what became the first PC Video Game professionally produced in Portugal “GAMBYS“; the company decided to start another project. These are some of the initial ballpen detailed doodles I did for an initial concept back then. I ended up not using any of this because we soon realize I was illustrating more for something that we didn´t had technology back then when the fastest computer was a pentium at 133mhz for example.
These environments are more suited for a MMROPG nowadays than for what we could do 25 years ago with technology available back then out of an independent low budget company.
This was my idea for a steampunk old rusting world at the time and I was just sketching stuff to see what could come out of this initial processs.


So this project was put on halt and the company became an Hospitality Software House of great success here in Portugal for several years ( still on today ) and for which I design hospitality software for about 10 years in between other illustration work, because I didn´t intended to be designing boring and burocratic hospitality software forever.

Anyway these are some of the ballpen spontaneous sketches I did back then out of a couple more dozes I have somewhere awaiting to be scanned or something…
