“THE HIDDEN SPACESHIP” – STORYBOARD

Many people ask me how to start illustrating for a children book, so this is an example of how I start to illustrate a book. I´m not actually one of those illustrators who do a lot of pre-planning and extensive sketches but I like to go through each text at this early stage and just translate it into a storyboard as if I was doing it for a movie as all my artwork is very cinematic anyway. At this stage is not about details but about the visual compositions and about the overall mood for each scene.

Once I get this right the rest is actually easy because it´s all about rendering and fine tuning each detail until a page is finished. But that´s another topic for later. For now this is how i start.

“WEST OF OZ : PIC 8 – ROCKET TOWN” Making of.

So here´s the complete step by step making of for this brand new one. This is actually a good example of one of my ideas change overtime during the making of an image and why I don´t plan anything in advance as it would be a waste of time in my worklow anyhow. 😉
The initial idea was to place some sort of fairy tale village against an epic crashed spaceship but then that got a bit abstract at some point. Then I thought about placing a character reading an Oz book, but then again my pics are not about characters but about environments . So finally I got the idea of the rocketship. It gave the perfect retro style I was searching for and at the same time it helped to give scale to the whole background.
Here it goes, from start to finish.

SKETCH : “West of Oz ” – Pic 8 : Work in Progress – Phase I

Just another pic for myself I´m working on. I´m in the middle of another complex children book commission, of which as it tends to be, I cannot show anything on my pages yet  because contractual reasons and so I need to have something to keep posting on this blog.
I started this pic yesterday without a single idea in mind as usual and so let´s see where this one goes or even if I get to complete it.

Fun stuff.

“Thunder and Lightning” – Still getting good reviews on Amazon

“Thunder and Lightning” – Still getting good reviews on Amazon

Noticed just now that one of the books I did 5 years ago (back in 2013);  “THUNDER AND LIGHTNING” written by the wonderful Mary Evans which was a pleasure to work with at the time still has excellent reviews from all the readers; all FIVE STARS up until now. Really cool.

I don´t have many pics to showcase here about this project but you should check it out if you are looking for a fun story for kids to help them loose their fear of storms. 😉

This was one the books which I did entirely in IPad 2, finger painting with the ARTRAGE app which was one of the first digital illustration softwares I ever used.

Just a couple of test pics.

These are a few test pics for something I will probably be illustrating in the near future.
I do a few of these everytime I get a new text to illustrate just to see if my illustration style can work. Sometimes a great text does not work visually and I like to make sure I can do justice to what the authors writte and so instead of rough sketches I tend to do these illustrations just to get confortable with a project before I begin officially on it.

AMADIS DE GAULA : Making of – Childrens Book Illustration

CHILDREN BOOK ILLUSTRATION
This was one of my recent books for the Portuguese publishing market. It´s called “Amadis de Gaula : A Knight in Love” and it was written by Portuguese teatcher and history investigator Helena Lourenço based mostly on a forgotten historical text from the Middle Ages written somwhere in the Iberian Peninsula which now is divided into Portugal and Spain. The original was an adult text which Helena adapted into a children book format.

Here´s some images from my making of process. Not all but enough to give you an idea of how everything was illustrated.

NEW SITE / BLOG : ICREATEWORLDS.NET

Well, my new site is up. And this time I´m in wordpress. After testing several platforms I came to the conclusion this one was the best for me for the way it allows me the perfect integration between a regular portfolio site for my artwork and all the power a wordpress blog has.

new_site

So this will now be my home. My idea is to use the site as my porfolio to showcase some of my artwork around but also to play with the blog and not only post some tutorials when I get the time to create them, but also talk about all the stuff that inspires me.
I get a lot of questions from people wanting to learn how to get into this illustration thing; how to carve your own niche and all that and so I´ll try to post some articles based on my experience. It´s just my point of view, but one thing that I found over the years illustrating professionally as a freelancer is that the world is really big and so the good news is there is room for everyone.
The bad news… the world is really big. 🙂

avatar teste3

Also on this blog, you´ll find articles about stuff that inspires me to create my artwork. I get a ton of inspiration from books, music and of course movies along with talk radio and audio books and so to answer the old question : where do you get your ideas from ?… I´ll be posting some reviews on those things too.

So this being a blog about illustration is also a blog about what inspires me to illustrate and so don´t expect a technical thing all the time.

I do a lot of hiking so you will be seeing some photos from my expeditions around my area always in search of lost beaches to swim on and so expect anything that has something to do with the art of illustrating. It´s not all about skills and technique but also about inspiration and so this is my idea behind this blog.

01

As long as you are reading this, you might care to know that I have a fully free fantasy comics up there waiting for you to download the 4 books I illustrated some years ago, so go get it. If you love crazy sci-fi / fantasy stuff you´ll probably enjoy my “ONCE UPON A TIME ON MARS” 180 page comics saga.

Fantasy-comics-cover01

Other than that you can find plenty of illustrations I did over the years since I started back in 1992 and so don´t forget to take a look at my sci-fi / fantasy / childrens book portfolios too. Besides the main galleries there´s also a few book projects for you to browse like for examploe “A Comet´s Tale” so if you enjoy imaginary worlds just dive into my website at will.

And if you have a project for me, Hey, I´m a freelance illustrator !!
