This was inspired by one of my favorite scifi movies “NATURAL CITY“. I love oriental cinema and this movie in particular has a spaceport romantic scene that inspires me a lot,  so the whole feel for my pic came from that bit.

I was not in a rush and I painted in several days at the end of the day to relaxed from payed commission work.
I never do sketches, color tests, or anything related to any sort of planning whatsover.
All my “sketches” are done inside my imagination before a pic starts. When I have the visual “sketched” in my mind, ( color mood included ),  I just start to paint the pic and then the aditional texture work if needed brings it to life at the end.

I could have spent easily about 10 or 20 more hours on this just zooming in every detail and refining it to a point this would look almost photo realistic. Its easy for me to do that, but I don´t have time for creating “completed” paintings no more because I have commissions to do for other type of projects; usually children book stuff away from this type of art that I love.
Since I left Photoshop for good and started to paint witg Clip Studio Paint I actually like the way the brushes can give a more traditional feel to a paint rigth away and so I left this image in a rough phase because I like the “painting” feel where we see all the bush strokes and all that.

This also ended up with some sort of John Harris space art feel which was totally not intentional but unavoidable since his space scenes were really a big part of my childhoood back in the late 70s.

“WEST OF OZ 9 : PINK BUNNY MECH BORDER PATROL”

My HUION GT221 PRO has just arrived. So this is my first test pic with it. It´s a lot different from my old GT220 in the sense that I´m still ajusting my painting style to cope with all the new pen pressure levels but this new Huion product sure is an outsanding alternative to the expensive Wacoms out there.
So anyway, here´s my first test pic. Another “West of Oz” pic for me as I´m starting to think about creating a book based on this concept of mine just for myself.

Secondary concept art / sketchbook tests or illustrations I didn´t used.

Secondary concept art / sketchbook tests or illustrations I didn´t used.

When you work fulltime in illustration you end up doing a ton of stuff you never show anyone. Either test pics, speedpainting images, illustration experiments or just loose sketches created for fun, each illustrator has plenty of stuff like which mostly never gets to see the light of day.
In this batch now, there´s some test pics, illustration I didn´t liked, illustration I like but didn´t used because I want to create better versions, or early color tests, pics I did just to illustrate video tutorials, sketchbook color stuff, etc.

Some people out there are of the opinion that an artist should never reveal his inferior artwork or –making of– test pieces because that can give a wrong impression of his work quality in general to potential clients out there. I do not agree.

I´ve always showcased my best and my worst stuff all over the places and I never got less clients or commissions because of that. In fact people like to see that illustrators are not those magic crafters that can come up with imaginary worlds out of thin air when they want and so I like to let people see that I have plenty of stuff done which is just as bad or regular as any other person out there.
I have a lot more regular pieces like this spread around my “failed pics” folders through out my hardrives and so now and then I´ll show you more, for now hope you have enjoyed  these.

“THE MONUMENTS of MARS” : COMICS Color Sketches & Tests . Work in Progress

Besides wanting to do a comics adaptation of the novel “The Neverending Story” one of these days, another one of my dream projects is to put to paper a story that I have in my imagination since I started to follow the Face on Mars thing more than 30 years ago and which is a mix of all those fringe themes with the cosmological scope of an Olaf Stapledon I love called “The Last and First Men” written back in the 1930s which even was a major influence on Arthur Clarke for his Rendez-vous-with-Rama novels later on.
So I have my own take on a cosmological saga spanning millions of years and it all starts with a little nod to the Martian enigma. I´ve been creating some illustrations to train for that project which you can see on my main gallery here on this site ( the Mars ones ) , but a couple years ago I had some time to spare and I started to doodle what you will see next.
I wanted to keep it loose in style and so I just kept on sketching and painting without much thought put into it. So this is some sort of sketchbook artwork.
Enjoy, although the text is still in Portuguese here.

I didn´t took it further due to lack of time but also because I noticed that I was starting to use an american comics visual language on the layouts and I don´t want to create a scifi comics story within that particular style. I want it to look like an old European BD (comics) from the golden age of French-Belgium BD of the late 1970s, something within a Luc Orient / Valerian / Bernard Prince / Druuna type of thing and stay as much further away possible from the american super-hero visual formula.
I plan to restart this sometime in the future as my scifi story is still developing inside my imagination and so when I have the time I will work on this for sure. Maybe I won´t just do a comics story but a mix between a novel an illustration book and comics.
Let´s see what the future brings.

Thubnail Sketches

One of the things I love to do are these thumbnail sketches. It´s my favorite part of each illustration process even if I end up not using most of what I do, it creates a nice archive of stuff to reference later.
So here´s a couple of simple examples of how I can start an illustration. In this stage this is where you can define not only the essential shapes of your pic but also very important the dark/light values you might want to establish from the start. After this is just a question of how much details you want to paint later.

Drawing Tutorial : “OZ – Looking for Dorothy” – Making of

DRAWING TUT-logo

And this time here´s the step-by-step process from  my OZ pic.
It´s called “Looking for Dorothy”.
It´s more or less self-explanatory as a drawing tutorial so I hope everyone understands the several creative choices I went through from start to finish to create the image.
One of the things I love the most is to take known stuff and give it my own spin. The Wizard of Oz books and movie are part of my inspiration when it comes to my imaginary worlds and so I tend to go back to it just for fun or when someone commissions me “an Oz style” pic which happens more than often.
This was just another one.

Concept_Art_07_Wizard_of_OZ_site

You might notice there aren´t many characters in my landscapes and this is because what I really love is to create imaginary geographies and fantasy worlds.
Characters bore me to death and I only illustrate them mostly for scale or when I have to because I´m working on a childrens book.
When I was a kid I absolutely hated those illustrated children books that were set in imaginary worlds but then, the only thing the books had illustrated in them were the characters and what they were doing ( sometimes with a little bit of background behind them ). What I always wanted to see were the worlds where these characters lived in and soon I started to notice that illustrators mostly did character based images for these books rather than illustrating the imaginary worlds.
That has always been my inspiration.
As everyone always asks me for tutorials and tips on how to paint my type of imaginary stuff  you can find my tutorials on perspective if you click here ( go check them out / read the first one and then follow through my “perspective tutorial series ).
Then you´ll understand better what follows.
Here´s a breakdown for this “Wizard of Oz” pic.

To illustrate imaginary worlds as a freelancer children book illustrator or freelance artist available for work I based my portfolio on the worlds I can imagine rather than on the characters that can inhabit those places as from what I see out there most illustrators work on characters and not on environments, except in concept art.
So my idea was always think about illustration for a book the same way I have to think about creating concept art. I guess my children book illustrations like this OZ inspired one above show a bit of that concept art influence and that is something that I like to showcase.

Drawing Tutorial : “Finding Nemo” – Making of

Here´s the step-by-step process from one of my illustrations. It´s more or less self-explanatory as a drawing tutorial so I hope everyone understands the several creative choices I went through from start to finish to create what I call my “FINDING NEMO” illustration, inspired by 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea and my own version of the Nautilus submarine. My idea was to capture the moment Captain´s Nemo sub was discovered nowadays resting at the bottom of the ocean.

If you have any questions about this creative process let me know and I´ll do my best to guide you into your own creations.
