“THE NEVERENDING STORY : SKETCHBOOK” : ORIGINAL NOVEL COMICS ADAPTATION – Doodles & Initial Sketches

OldWork-logo

“THE NEVERENDING STORY : SKETCHBOOK”

Among my dream projects is to do a “comics” (European style “Banda-Desenhada/Bande-Desinée)  adaptation out of my all time favorite Fantasy novel ever; “THE NEVERENDING STORY / A HISTÓRIA INTERMINÁVEL” by Michael Ende.
The 1984 movie adaptation that covers roughly the first half of the novel is to blame for me wanting to become an illustrator. I had to find a way to also create incredible fantasy imaginary worlds like the one I saw that afternoon ( at 14 years old back in 1984 ) in a dark movie theater looking at the first image for the Ivory Tower landscape that appears on that Wolfgang Petersen movie.

Since then I read the novel dozens of times and I was utter disapointed when the second movie came out because it was a terrible adaptation of the second half of the novel. In fact “THE NEVERENDING STORY” must be one of the most destroyed books by Hollywood ever ! Because there as a “third movie”… agh !
Because I love the book so much I´ve been trying to create a comics version out of it since I was 14 actually ( I´ll post that early attempt soon in my “museum” section here ) and so every now and then I start to sketch some versions of what I could use as a graphic style in my “comics” adaptation one of these days.
These are some of the last sketches I did a few years ago.

Some of the characters here you didn´t saw them in the movies because they only exist in the book and my idea is to faithfully adapt the novel even if I get inspired by some design ideas from the original german movie.
I have some other images I´ll post later when I can find them.

Thubnail Sketches

One of the things I love to do are these thumbnail sketches. It´s my favorite part of each illustration process even if I end up not using most of what I do, it creates a nice archive of stuff to reference later.
So here´s a couple of simple examples of how I can start an illustration. In this stage this is where you can define not only the essential shapes of your pic but also very important the dark/light values you might want to establish from the start. After this is just a question of how much details you want to paint later.
